What is a galvanized finish? Galvanization or galvanizing is the process of applying a protective zinc coating to steel or iron to prevent corrosion. The most common method is hot-dip galvanizing, in which parts are immersed in a bath of hot, molten zinc.

Galvanization protects against corrosion in several ways:
- It forms a barrier that prevents corrosive substances from reaching the underlying steel or iron.
- The zinc acts as a sacrificial anode, so even if the coating is scratched, the unprotected steel will still be protected by the remaining zinc.
- Zinc protects its base metal corroding iron.
- The zinc surface reacts with the atmosphere to form a compact, adherent patina that is insoluble in rainwater.
